Crummy Little Interlude

This might be one of many as... well, this is quite awkward actually... I can't find my camera cable to transfer the clips and images. Seriously, it's like, gone. Normally it's always been there yet the one time I desperately need the bugger, it packs it's bags and pisses off to... well, somewhere that's not here.

WHERE I NEED IT.

Inconsiderate pile of- *AHEM* anyway. Never mind though, that just means I'll have to do those updates later.

So until then, here's a little something I just did. Callum told me about this nifty spiffy (See Rachel? I didn't say it!) program that can record whatever you're doing on screen- Camstudio I believe it's called. With this, I'll be able to maybe start doing speed paints and show all you totally interested folks how I make artings.

This was a mere practice though. Hence why it's completely shit.

Yeeeeah, not the best in the world. But once I get acquainted with Camstudio and my editing programs, I'm certain the quality will pick up a tad. Here's hoping anyway!

Pictoplasma Part Three

Two parts in one day! My my, aren't you lucky.

... yeah, I'm really sorry about this.

Anyway, here are most of the sketches I did while I was in Berlin. I wanted to take a sketchbook like I did last year and draw as much as I could. It's very easy to get inspired at Pictoplasma. So I took the chance to try and push myself, draw some unique stuff and try to develop my characters a bit further. I haven't included every sketch I did, mainly because I didn't like them that much or because some were practice comic thumbnails that I still need to develop further before I'll let anyone see them.

Unfortunately you haven't been spared from all these. Enjoy!

Sketches of Pictoplasma's yeti mascot from last year.

Sketches of Ginger, Tobias and Sara

Ruby and BF being loving and badass and all that jazz.
Also featuring pigeons. You'll be seeing more of them.

Potential character development. Tweak seems to approve of Scarlet.
It seems that she's one of the few to make his eyes look normal...

Both the 2011 and 2012 mascots from Pictoplasma interacting.
It seemed pretty funny to me.

Blue character sketch.

Pigeon mid flight sketch

Expression sketches for 'Not a Drinker'

Close up of detailed image. I might colour this.

Character sketches of a little chihuahua who keeps popping
out of my pencil every now and then. I might develop him somehow..

One of the sketches where I tried to push myself. I could see
Ginger doing something like this. I hope I haven't butchered the
anatomy too much.

Another new thinga-ma-jig. As Rachel was busy drawing grotesque
imagery for her animation, I was inspired to draw a zombie pigeon.
I don't know if Blue is more disgusted by the fact that its a zombie or
buy how bad the anatomy is.

... I was starting to get Regular Show withdrawals at this point.

Funny story about this one. When I showed the Regular Pigeon sketch to Rachel, she
told me it freaked her out because of the eyelashes and then sketched a pigeon with a
bow on her head to show she was a female. So this abomination was born in response.

Points if you can get the reference.

... I don't know. Chibi BF threatening Green I think. Maybe the pigeon
crapped on BF and he scrunk down to get revenge? Would make more sense
than some of the animations I'd seen anyway.

Updated character sketch for Mayor Fat Cat.
I lost the crummy moustache and gave him a fluffy maw instead.

This one... I'm not entirely sure actually. Some sort of McBess inspired thing I think.
The devil tail was Paul's idea, something about Pictoplasma bringing out a different side to you.
Works for me.

I liked the original photo so I'm including it. Haters to the left.

Blue trying to get Tweak to STFU and listen to her.

Another sketch of the previously mentioned chihuahua.
I think I'll call him Titan.

And this would be the Crumbs Hardback Comic Book cover.
IF I HAD ONE!
... sorry, almost lost the happy. BUT THE HAPPY'S BACK!

... I have Fairly Odd Parents on the brain for some reason.

Chick Blue protecting chick Pink. Potential backstory development?

Baby Lilac likes baby Blue for protecting baby Pink. Baby. Baby. Baby, oooooh~

Green being a dick as usual.

This pretty much sums up Pink and Green's relationship.
Can't take credit for the quote; I believe I read it on Frog Raccoon Strawberry.

Blue posing

Grayson being his usual lovestruck self. Also a sketch of Rick.

At this point I hadn't drawn anything else and so Rachel doodled a sad face.
Leading me to draw this. I... wait, I don't drink anymore, I can't use that as an excuse.

And fnally, last but not least, Rachel's dragon drawn in my... er, style, I suppose.
And if you haven't boiled your own eyes out from the sheer horror then congratulations for making it to the end! We'll be back tomorrow with stuff from the character walk! Whoop dee shoot.

Have a good 'un, bros.

Pictoplasma Part Two

Hmm, it seems I'll need to find my camera cable to transfer the photos before I can share the character walk photos and various pictoplasma clips. So I think this entry will discuss some of my favourite conference speakers.

I liked pretty much all of them for different reasons (obviously to sit in on all of the conferences) but if I did a list on about every single one, the entry will be much too long. Which I know is something thats generally expected of me but I have too much to write about and not enough time to write about it in. Not to mention I should really get back to feeding those damn pigeons.

Here are the ones that particularly stood out for me.

Joel Trussell

Punga

Nathan Jurevicius

Grant Orchard

Florentijn Hofman

Pleix

Gary Baseman

Julia Pott

Gemma Correll

Joshua Ben Longo

Femke Heimstra

... I'm actually surprised how many of these have blogspots or tumblrs. I think I'll start following these. Oh, and I'm letting their work speak for itself as it's good enough to do so. Also, I'm shamefully lazy today.

Tune in next time for the many sketches Emma doodled in Berlin!

Pictoplasma Part One

And this time I hasn't taken a month to type up the blog entry. Aww yeah.

*ahem* Well, I have a lot I want to talk about and I think if I put it all in the one entry people would want to blow their brains out due to the length although that's going by the possibility that people read this thing. So because I'm so super nice and awesome, I'm splitting my Pictoplasma shenanigans into maybe two or three entries; less words and blathering for your reading pleasure. Although it's moreso because I left my camera at home and can't upload the photos and video clips because I haven't transferred them to my laptop yet. But lets just pretend it's the first reason, shall we?

So, for this entry I'll talk about my favourite screenings and conferences. After this I'll talk about the character walk, then share my favourites of the many sketches I did and then (MAYBE if I get this done) upload a short video of all the clips I did if my time in Berlin. I took the time to do some videoing and whatnot; figured I could use the chance to get back into working with filming and editing.

I think it's only fitting to start with the Pictoplasma Festival 2012 video.

Now for the screenings. They were as weird and wonderful as you'd expect, especially if you'd been to Pictoplasma before. I won't be able to share every single one as there are too many and I might not be able to find them all on Youtube but I'll try and find as many of my favourites as I can.

(Sadly with this one I could only find the trailer. Apparently you can buy it on iTunes though.
I recommend it!)

(There are actually more of these. Note to self, check them out later!)

(Another I could only find the trailer for. Pity as this is a good one! Quite sad though.)

(I wasn't able to find the whole thing but this was one of the funniest bits)

... wow, that's actually more than I thought I'd have. And thats actually not all of my favourites, I do have more. Sadly I wasn't able to find them all. Once I do I'll maybe put them on here to share with you all.

Well, this is kind of awkward. I was gonna talk about the conferences next on this same entry buuuut... it's running kind of long already. I guess I'll do that when I get home later today instead, let all this goodness sink in first.

Not to mention I want to head back homeward soon as I'm a little worried about my car. It's the first time I drove to the train station alone and left it there so I guess I'm having some kind of parental over protectiveness over it. Hopefully that'll pass the more I use it. Not to mention the suspension went over one of the wheels while I was in Berlin. Yikes.

Anyhow, forgive me for my non-Pictoplasma/animation rambling. I'll be back later with part two, where I'll discuss the conferences and maybe the character walk. Huh. Maybe it will take me a month after all.

Ciao!

I Done Doodled!

Figured I better upload SOMETHING on here before I pop off to Berlin.

Ruby Meets Ginger concept
Just a kind of rehash of Ruby's initial meeting with Ginger. I went into it before, Ruby being nervous around unfamiliar people, blahblahblah. I'm considering making her have something of a social anxiety around people she's unfamiliar with. Eh, I'll think about it.
It's unfinished but I guess with Ginger's colourful personality and confidence and Ruby's nervousness and insecurity (at that time) that you could see something symbolic in it if you wish. I'll come back to this sketch later.

Anyway, other news. As you well know, I'll be in Berlin for the week so it's unlikely I'll have much time to be on the laptop blogging. I've got a little sketchbook to doodle in and maybe get signed by folk while I'm there and I'm even dusting off my camera to do some videoing and whatnot. About time I dabbled into that little hobby again! I might even do some editing practice with the footage!

Also this.

Oh God, it can't be...
Oh God no...

Yep, I passed my driving test. That's right folks, I'm loose on the streets!

... I know, I'm scared too.

I'll try to draw something else tomorrow but it might be unlikely, what with me running around making sure I have everything ready for Berlin and all. If that's the case, I'll see you folks next week. Have a good 'un and I hope you had a happy Easter. Oh, and it's Eadweard Muybridge's birthday today. If you're an animatory person such as myself you have a lot to thank him for. Go to Google and look at his horses!

Cheerie bye!

Background Experimentingeringering

I'm gonna be doing a bit of doodling before I head off to Berlin, both characters and settings. For now, I wanted to see how I could make a house and what techniques I'd be happy to keep using.

When I do backgrounds, I normally make them from the shape tool in Photoshop, using the square tool for buildings to make squares and rectangles, the circle tool to make clouds and bushes and so on, all that good stuff. I like to make them kind of simplistic, yet with their own details. Think of the backgrounds from Eddsworld and My Little Pony and you get the idea of where I want to go.

They're often always lineless so that they don't take attention away from the characters. However, I did try some linework with the house used in the below images and... well, I'm not sure. I think it looks pretty good on its own but if characters were involved with the piece it could be very distracting.

What do you guys think? And if you have any ideas for me to try, don't be afraid to share them. I'm here to learn and improve after all!

Wing Movement Reference

Hi folks!

Don't mind me, just leaving this here for future reference. It can be hard to think of how a wing can be positioned when trying to be casual or otherwise so this'll be a good help for me. It's amazing what you can find on tumblr.

I almost want to doodle some pigeons with these wing poses... hmm...

Oh, and Pirates was awesome. But there was no doubt about that, obviously. Also, the Ice Age 4 trailer... part of me rolled my eyes that there was gonna be another but it left me in stitches so I suppose I can't complain. I just hope they haven't shown all their best bits already.

Also, looooove teenage Peaches character design.
